As I was saying in my previous post, it there were a better version of ourselves that we could return to, and use like a resource – if we could reset ourselves to this backup version, think how convenient that would be! Like waking up inside a dream, it would be as if we had all the time in the world! Imagine the problems we could solve…
However, we obviously can’t just wake ourselves up and return to the Saucy Code of Existence at will. We would have to coordinate the other versions of ourselves to come in for landing at the same time, which would be a significant piece of choreography that would involve cancelling out a lot of ‘noise’ (there are some problems that even quantum computers find hard, such as corroborating the Riemann conjecture, for example).
Furthermore, we can’t just treat human beings as if they are a resource that can be rewound to an earlier state when we feel like running our experiment again…
Imagine if an alien arrived in your midst, seemingly from another land. How would you know that it was not your greater self returning to provide you with a valuable service? Would you run out with pitch fork in hand and try to kill it?
Who carries the burden of proof in this matter? Who has the judgement to know where the human ends and the non-human begins?
If the creature turned out to be impossible to kill, at least we could confidently say that it was not in our land afterall – we would be in ITS land. P would be equal to NP, we would have solved the mystery of death and the alien would be tuning us in to realise that we were living in an entirely new world.
Like the cosmological constant or dark matter, the alien would have been with us all along – always has been, always will be.
